Quality characterization of advanced generation induced mutant lines in Basmati rice

Twenty seven mutant lines obtained as advanced generation through selection following physical and chemical mutagenesis of Basmati lines viz., Basmati 370, Saanwal Basmati and Ranbir Basmati were characterized for quality traits. Results revealed that mean values for all quantitative and quality traits deviated more towards positive than towards negative direction. Selections on the basis of mean performance in M3 and M4 generation
led to the isolation of six mutant lines. Two of the mutants were from Basmati 370 and four were Saanwal Basmati derivatives. None of the Ranbir Basmati derivative out performed its control parent.
